Vera C. Rubin Observatory Likely Discovers Our Solar System's Sixth Dwarf Planet Beyond Pluto
Scientific American Content: GlobalOctober 27, 2026
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has identified 2026 ED138, a massive object orbiting 46 times farther from the sun than Earth, as a likely sixth dwarf planet candidate in our solar system. Between 600 and 1,500 kilometers wide, it remained hidden for years in starfield glare until the recently activated observatory's powerful instruments cut through the noise. Astronomers found supporting observations dating back to 2016, and if it's confirmed to have enough mass to pull itself into a spherical shape, it would join Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres in that rare category.
