The Wolverine's Bite Force That Defies Logic

A wolverine's bite exerts 1,900 pounds per square inch. For comparison, a human bites at 150 PSI. A grizzly bear, 300 pounds of apex predator, manages around 1,200 PSI. The wolverine—40 pounds, stocky, built low—wins.
The physics here is architectural. Their skulls are domed and extraordinarily thick, with muscle attachments positioned to concentrate force into a point smaller than a bear's wider muzzle. The bite doesn't spread the load. It concentrates it. Teeth lock into place because the jaw joint itself barely flexes—a sacrifice in mobility for absolute shearing power. They can crunch bone that would splinter a wolf's teeth.
This matters because wolverines hunt and scavenge in a landscape where other predators have already picked through the carcass. A moose femur that stopped a wolf cold splinters between a wolverine's jaws. The marrow inside wasn't worth the energy expenditure for anyone else. For a wolverine, it's caloric surplus in a boreal forest where winter lasts eight months.
Their prey doesn't see it as a fair advantage. Wolverines take animals three to four times their body weight—mountain goats on cliff faces, beavers in water, lynx forced out of their kills. Not because they're faster or larger, but because the force they can deploy on contact is so extreme that escape becomes impossible. A single bite to the spine or skull and the contest ends.
The bite force wouldn't matter without the temperament to back it. Wolverines are territorial, solitary, and not conflict-averse. They'll challenge bears to food kills. They've been observed returning repeatedly to traps designed to hold larger predators, tearing through wire fencing to drag away trapped animals. The bite is a tool, but it's the willingness to use it that makes the wolverine legendary across every ecosystem where it lives.
