US Army creates robotics technician job to focus on drone warfare
Defense NewsOctober 12, 2026
The Army just formalized its first dedicated robotics technician role, inducting 10 warrant officers as 390A specialists designed to master drone systems independent of regular special operations troops. These technicians will complete a 19-week course building autonomous drones that rely on artificial intelligence and machine learning rather than GPS, including "tethered" systems connected by fiber optic cables to resist jamming. The move reflects growing recognition that autonomous warfare requires deep technical expertise—commanders realized operators couldn't absorb robotics mastery on top of existing skills. As the Army scales autonomous systems across brigades and groups, these specialists will advise commanders on deployment and troubleshoot technical problems in real time.
