SPACE MILESTONE: Japan Launches World-First Mission to Bring Back Martian Moon Samples...
Science | The GuardianOctober 18, 2026
Japan is preparing an unprecedented mission to retrieve material from Phobos, one of Mars's two small moons. If successful, this would mark the first time any nation has collected samples from a Martian moon and returned them to Earth. The endeavor represents a significant step in Mars exploration, building on decades of robotic missions that have studied the Red Planet's surface and atmosphere from orbit and landing sites.
Such a sample-return mission could yield insights into the origin and composition of Martian moons, which remain poorly understood. Scientists have long debated whether Phobos and its sister moon Deimos were once independent asteroids captured by Mars's gravity, or formed alongside the planet itself. Samples would also help inform future human missions to Mars by revealing more about the environment astronauts might encounter in the region.
