LARGEST CRYPTO HACK: Binance Suffers $6.3B Breach in Record Heist...
BBC NewsOctober 30, 2026
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange platform, disclosed that approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets were compromised in what researchers believe may represent the biggest theft in the industry's history. The exchange said it had frozen roughly half the stolen funds but acknowledged that significant portions remain in attackers' hands, though it committed to covering customer losses. Initial investigation pointed to a compromised employee device as the entry point for unauthorized withdrawals.
Two major crypto analytics firms attributed the attack to a North Korean hacking operation called TraderTraitor, marking an escalation in a pattern of state-sponsored theft targeting cryptocurrency platforms. Western intelligence agencies have long documented North Korea's reliance on funds stolen from crypto exchanges to support its weapons development programs. The incident triggered a broader industry response, with other major platforms including Tether and Circle freezing billions in assets they identified as connected to the theft.
