BALI'S GLOWING FUTURE: Conservation Effort Aims to Bring Fireflies Back...
Conservation newsSeptember 26, 2026
Wayan Wardika remembers collecting fireflies as a child in Bali to use as lanterns, but four decades later the insects had vanished from his village. In 2020 he launched Bring Back the Light, Indonesia's only firefly conservation program, where he and three scientists breed the insects in captivity and release them back to rice paddies and forests. The work addresses a larger ecological crisis: firefly populations across Southeast Asia are collapsing from pesticide use, light pollution, and habitat destruction, taking with them natural pest control and pollination services. Wardika is now pushing local farmers to abandon chemicals and adopt organic methods, recognizing that breeding alone won't succeed without restoring the ecosystems fireflies depend on.
