Barry Murphy made 569 appearances for Barnsley across 16 years as a defender, a club record that stood as his lasting legacy. Known as "Spud," he joined from South Shields in 1962 and became the club's first substitute in 1965, later setting a streak of 182 consecutive games and earning player of the year honors in 1972. After retiring in 1978, he remained embedded in the club through coaching roles and frequent charity appearances at Oakwell, the ground where he spent his entire playing career.
